Who We Are
William Temple House is a 40-year-old, faith-based agency headquartered in Northwest Portland providing comprehensive services to help keep working poor families together through financial or personal struggles.

Through emergency social services, professional mental health counseling, and voluntary pastoral care, William Temple House offers vital support to local families in crisis.

Who We Serve
William Temple House focuses on working poor individuals and families. Our clients are typically minimum-wage earners caught in a gap of services -- they earn too much money to qualify for government assistance, but lack private health care coverage and standard employment benefits.

Financial, material and personal crises arise frequently and unexpectedly for our clients. William Temple House provides support that helps struggling individuals and families maintain strength, stability, and hope.

Why We’re Unique
William Temple House operates independently of government or United Way funding. All services are funded by donations from individuals, foundations, and businesses and by sales from the William Temple House Thrift Store. There are few barriers to receiving care and we’re able to treat each person in a timely, respectful way.

Staff members focus on providing high-quality service, respect, and open access to anyone who needs help -- regardless of age, gender, religion, ethnicity, or marital status. Services are tailored to fit individual needs, whether they are counseling, food, bus passes, hygiene items, or clothing vouchers.

Why We’re Efficient
William Temple House supplements the efforts of paid staff with the assistance of many long-time, devoted volunteers. Last year our dedicated volunteers contributed more than 28,500 hours – service valued at more than $546,000!

Professional counseling services often are provided by graduate-level counseling interns who practice under the supervision of full-time licensed staff. William Temple House is a well-respected, established training facility for graduate counseling students in the greater Portland area.

The Difference You Can Make
Donations of non-perishable food, clothing, hygiene products and infant items provide emergency relief. In addition, your donations of clothing, furniture, and household goods to our Thrift Store are resold to support William Temple House services.

Gifts of cash, securities, or real estate directly benefit families by allowing William Temple House the flexibility to meet urgent mental health counseling and social service needs.

Programs and Services Offered
by William Temple House

Professional Mental Health Counseling
William Temple House offers a unique mental-health counseling program for couples, families and individuals. Since William Temple House operates independently of government or United Way support, there are few barriers to treatment.

“One of the things that’s most precious to me about William Temple House is that we don’t have to march to anyone else’s drum. We can use every resource to help people address their problems,” says Susan Bettis, Ph.D., clinical director of the counseling department.

Social Services
Food Pantry featuring a Self-Service Shopping Area. William Temple House offers a mini grocery store setting with shelves and baskets so visitors can select the food they will use. This approach allows families to take ownership of their meals and nutrition, while also supporting a culturally-diverse diet.

Children’s Clothing Closet. Children frequently outgrow their parents’ budgets for clothing and shoes. Twice a year, William Temple House provides a week’s worth of age-appropriate, well-fitting clothing to at-risk and vulnerable students. (Overall school attendance and performance improve when children don’t have to worry about the appearance and function of their clothing.)

Voluntary Pastoral Care. William Temple House serves the working poor individuals and families who walk through our doors without regard to faith or religion. Our agency is rooted in the Episcopalian church and pastoral counseling is available to those who seek it.

Classes and Workshops
Movies and More. This self-esteem building course helps adolescents aged 10-13 who are targets of bullying by peers. The class uses movies, music, and art to help pre-teens and teens develop coping skills for emotionally stressful situations.

Building Healthy Relationships. Individuals and couples learn new skills for better communication, dealing with conflict, and building closeness in relationships during this class which is offered several times each year.

Grandparents Raising Grandkids. This new workshop will help grandparents meet the special challenges as well as experience the special joys of raising grandchildren.
